Diagnose the Problem
If you see slower-than-normal speeds when using data on your iPhone’s internet slow, there could be some factors at play. First, try some basic fixes like restarting both your phone and its cellular data connection (you’ll find options for these in iOS settings). If that doesn’t work, it could be that there are issues with either AT&T or Apple’s servers. You can also check out Apple’s System Status page to see if any outages have been reported in your area.
5 Possible Fixes
To fix a problem, you need first to recognize that there is one. Before we jump in with some possible fixes, let’s briefly discuss how an iPhone uses WiFi vs cellular data. An iPhone connects to a WiFi network via its radio antenna. When connected, it will automatically search for and connect to an available WiFi signal. Because of increased bandwidth, you will get faster upload and download speeds when on a WiFi connection than on a cellular connection. That being said, here are 5 possible fixes for slow speeds
How to Test Each Fix
There are two different ways that you can test if a fix worked. The first, and quickest way, is by running a speed test again. You could also try loading a webpage in Safari or Chrome on your phone. If it loads fast again, then one of these fixes worked for you! If it’s still not loading correctly after testing a few of these fixes, then there may be an issue with your home internet connection and you should contact tech support.
iPhone’s internet is slow Change DNS Settings
Your DNS settings are how you direct a web browser to where it needs to go on a network. If you set these incorrectly, websites might not load properly, and it could take longer for pages and content to appear. There are many reasons why your DNS settings might be throwing you off, but resetting them is an easy fix. Go into Settings, tap Wi-Fi, then tap and hold on your Wi-Fi network name until you see Advanced Options. Tap that and then tap DNS > Pointer Record (PTR) > Create New Pointer Record. After making sure that has all been done, go back into WiFi in Settings, connect again with your wifi network, then check out your web browsing again.
iPhone’s internet slow Turn Off LTE/4G
If you’re on an LTE network and seeing a dramatic slowdown, try turning off LTE and connecting via 3G. Go to Settings > Cellular Data, and make sure Enable LTE is unchecked. If that doesn’t work, make sure that Cellular Data Network is set to 3G. To save battery life, turn down background app refresh for apps like Facebook or Flipboard (you can always toggle it back on when you need it). Close apps running in the background. Tap Home > Task Switcher (it looks like two overlapping rectangles), then swipe up on any apps that aren’t currently open but are running in RAM; tap the red minus-sign icon next to each one to force quit them.
Reboot Your Router/Modem
Reboot both devices and then wait a few minutes for them to completely restart. When you’re confident that both are up and running, try re-accessing your Wi-Fi connection. If all goes well, you should now be able to use your Wi-Fi connection at full speed. Sometimes the reboot is all it takes to fix the problem. Other times it may be an issue with your router or modem. To find out if this is the case, power down your router/modem and unplug it from the wall for a couple of minutes before plugging it back in. Wait until everything has been fully powered on before trying the connection again.
